Year 6 SCSSP Quick Sticks Hockey Tournament

Two teams showed great resilience, teamwork and sportsmanship during the tournament.

On Thursday 12th February, two teams of year 6s travelled to a windy Wilberforce Road, Cambridge, for a SCSSP Quick Sticks Hockey Tournament.

19 teams were divided into five different competition pools, playing against other schools in our South Cambridgeshire School Sports Partnership (SCSSP).

The matches were only 5 minutes long, with 2 boys and 2 girls playing at a time, from a team of 6. The matches were very challenging, with plenty of tackles and with no goalkeeper allowed, only a defender, goal scoring still proved hard work at times! There was some fantastic defending from all schools throughout!

Swavesey A played 3 initial 'pool' matches (after a school dropped out at the last minute), finishing overall in Division One, and Swavesey B played four matches, finishing in Division Two. Both teams had three final matches to find out their overall placings, and these matches were tough, in the top two divisions.

Overall, Swavesey A finished 4th out of 19 teams and Swavesey 'B' finished in 7th place. What a fabulous result for both teams.

Here are some thoughts from the teams:

Lauren:Today I think we all worked really hard and did really well.

Miranda: I really enjoyed it and it was really good fun. I wouldn't say I was really confident before, but then I really liked it. My favourite position is defence.

Eildh: I really liked it, and before I came I wasn't sure about playing against other teams but now I feel that I can. It was really fun.

Lila-Rose : I enjoyed today because there was lots of teamwork and chemistry, and it was really fun playing against other teams and well done to us!

Millie: I enjoyed today and the umpires were really kind and really fair with their umpiring and scoring.I was really nervous before it started, but I feel really proud now. I like playing up front.

Amy: I really enjoyed playing against people I don't know. I really enjoyed the tournament and probably think that hockey is now my favourite sport!

Mateen: It was fun, and I was really excited before, and it was even more fun than I expected!

Ben: I enjoyed playing. I was a bit nervous at the start, but then I got used to it, and it was really fun. My favourite position is defending.

Morgan: It was more fun than I expected, and my favourite part was playing hockey with my friends as well.

Henry: I'm proud of myself because I've only played hockey at school before, and we have done quite well here. My favourite position is right wing, where I scored lots of goals but also got a bashed knee from the pitch and then fell on the other too!

Fred: I really liked how the sports leaders were kind and knew the rules really well. I was nervous at first but then got more confident. My favourite position was probably in defence.

Kierat: I liked how everyone played as a team, and it wasn't just one person doing everything in the team. I was a bit nervous at the start, but now that I've done it, I'm really proud and happy. I love playing up front the most.

Well done for an amazing effort throughout the morning. You were all a great credit to the school. Thank you to Mrs Howard for accompanying me.
