Updates from Mrs Norden

We are really looking forward to the children being back with us next week (Tuesday 5th) and hope you have all had a wonderful summer, enjoying some rest, as well as some adventures.

This term we welcome some new staff to different teams within the school and hope they enjoy their time with us.  Mr Jiggins has joined our Year 5/6 team, Mrs Seaden our Reception team and Mrs Keen our Admin and Finance team.  I am sure you will meet them through the term to put faces to names.

As always the arrival of the new academic year, and new term, seems to have come around so quickly, and it feels as though there is still so much to do to be ready. In preparation, please find in the sections below details to help with your organisation. Additionally, you will find updates and guidance for changes which will come into place this term for certain systems.

Safeguarding

The government have updated guidance for 'Keeping children safe in education' in schools and colleges, and this contains additional information for us to encompass within our systems and protocols.  Updates to our Safeguarding and Child Protection policy, will be published on our website's safeguarding page once completed within the next few weeks.

As part of our safeguarding protocols may I remind you that children should not have mobile phones in school, nor should they wear smart watches which can connect to the Internet.  Please can we ask you to ensure these are not brought to school.  If they are, we will secure them in the office for return at the end of the day, and will contact you to discuss.

Autumn Term General Information for the organisation of the children

5th September - Children's first day

Gate systems remain the same, please remember the narrow side path around the side of the school and car park is a one-way system moving from the front to the rear of the school. We had quite a few people accessing it the wrong way towards the end of term which led to a couple of injuries and a few children becoming panicked when separated from adults.

For those needing to access both Reception classes, Swans, Owls, and Preschool using the front gate is the quickest route.  While all other classes can be accessed via the back gate more quickly.  If you should need to access to both please start at the front and work your way round leaving by the rear gate.

PE days

Children need to come to school in PE kit on PE days. Children should not wear earrings for PE and will be asked to remove them as part of our H&S protocols.

Please note that whilst the days set out below are the PE days for each class there may be weeks when changes for operational reasons need to be accommodated.  If this is the case, information will be sent out to those classes either in a separate email or using our weekly newsletter the week before .

Rabbits and Mice - Thursday and Friday

Yr1/2 Foxes, Squirrels - Monday and Tuesday, Otters -Tuesday and Thursday

Yr3/4 Kingfishers and Badgers - Tuesday and Wednesday, Swans - Monday and Tuesday

Yr5/6 Owls and Swallows - Wednesday and Thursday, Ravens - Wednesday and Friday

Uniform and all clothing - please ensure clothing is named.  This enables us to ensure any lost property is returned and piles of unclaimed clothing does not build.

Jewellery - to ensure safety we encourage children not to wear jewellery at all to school, however, small studs are acceptable as they present less of a hazard.

Bags and items from home - as children will not be changing at school for PE they should only need to bring to school lunch boxes, outdoor wear (e.g. coats), water bottles and reading/library and homework books.  Other items should not be brought to school, and we ask that any bags for carrying items are as small as possible to support space in cloakrooms.

Year 6 - Year 6s are allowed to walk home with written permission from parents.  If you are happy for your child to walk home please can you email the school office to confirm this, using 'Year 6 walking home' as your email subject.  Any child without permission will be expected to be collected by an adult.

Please note that Year 5s still need to be collected. In the spring term the Year 5/6 team will undertake PSHE work with the Year 5s to support personal safety after which, if we assess they will be make safe choices, the option to walk home will become available.  We will write to you at this point.

Swimming Lessons and Top Up sessions for Year 4, 5 and 6 - Parents should have received an email from Mrs Turian this week detailing information linked to this and providing details for some children in these year groups to go swimming on Tuesday 5th.

Clubs for this term - Organisation for these will be completed next week and information will then be sent out to parents.  Places in clubs cannot be booked until we have finalised organisation, so please be patient and wait for the details to be sent out to you.

Covid Guidance - we are seeing a resurgence of Covid in the local area and ask that everyone maintains vigilance when symptoms occur in line with Covid guidance, which can be found here, to support medically vulnerable children and staff within the school.  If you are able to test please do so should your child be experiencing symptoms and if they test positive please keep them at home for 3 days from the start of their symptoms or the day of the test.  If you are unable to test please can we ask you to be cautious in order to support everyone's health.

Changes to our finance systems

Further to communication last term regarding our change from Bromcom (My Child at School - MCaS) to Tucasi (School Cash Office – SCOPay) for finances, we will shortly be sending out log in details for the new system.

Please note Bromcom will remain our database for your child’s information - this change relates to paying for services such as school meals, trips etc. which will now be booked and paid through SCOPay.

Accessing SCOPay

Parents who use our Early Years and Playwork Centre already have access to SCOPay, and the school meal option will be available from 1st September.

Initial log in details are sent to adults with parental responsibility, with one log in per child initially. Once one parent has signed up, the second parent will need to contact us directly to issue another log in. Please email the office on office@swavesey.cambs.sch.uk

When you first log in, your child may be in their previous class as the system will update until the children's first day back.

For further information about your SCOPay account please see the following guide:

School Meals

Those families who have a credit balance on MCaS will see that transferred to their SCOPay account over the next few days. There should not be any debt, but those who do owe money for their meals from previous terms should ensure that this is paid through MCaS before the start of term.

Please remember meals should be paid for in advance, not retrospectively. Schools are not obliged to provide a meal where there is a debt. School meals are free for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. For PreSchool and Years 3 through to 6 they are £2.40 per day.

We ask that meals are booked in advance and that you ensure your child knows what has been booked for them to avoid confusion at registration time. This also aids the caterers in reducing wastage – we are pleased to be able to offer pupils a choice of hot meal when they approach the counter at lunch, but we need to know the total number of hot meals in advance.

Please visit our lunches page on the school website for information from our catering supplier, particularly if your child has an allergy or an intolerance. The current menu continues until October half term.

Early Years and Playwork Centre (EYandP)

Please take time to read the fees and payment guidance for our EYandP Centre. They can be found on our website EYandP page – through the link below:

EYandP Fees and Funding Page

In particular, please note that we will send you a request for payment when sessions are booked at the start of the month and payment is due on request. It is time consuming and takes us away from other important tasks if we are having to chase payments throughout the month, especially as we have had to reduce our administrative and finance hours as explained last term. With the exception of extenuating circumstances, there is a 4 week notice period for cancellation of sessions.

Voucher payments are received into our bank account, mostly without notification and are applied to your account as regularly as we can – any request for payment will show the last payment made so you can see what has been applied.

Data sheets - if you still have these with changes needing to be made please bring the completed sheets into the main office on Tuesday.  It is vitally important we have the correct contact information for you.
