Updates from Mrs Norden

Our last week has been full of Christmas excitement including parties, Christmas lunch, a Pantomime (Sleeping Beauty) and a visit from Santa himself.  Oh and I almost forgot - snow!  An exciting and busy end to the autumn term.

Below you will find links to articles about recent events, information on the Cambridge Area Young Artist Competition from Mrs Cowburn, an invitation to see the Christmas installations at Bethel Baptist church and a variety of updates. So please keep reading and use the links below, especially to the news articles many of which also have links to accompanying photos.

Please don't forget to send the Parish council your comments in support of their local highways scheme bid (details below).  All the issues raised are important, but I would like to particularly highlight the concerns around the parking at the junction of School Lane and Thistle Green which creates serious dangers to families crossing.

Continuing the theme of safety, I would like to express my concern over the footprints which are visible across the icy surface of the village pond.  Whilst I cannot be certain the age of those who have been walking across it, some of the prints are small enough to be primary aged children.  In assembly yesterday I spoke to the children about the dangers of walking on icy waterways, but it would be beneficial for this to be reinforced at home.

We have had many absences today but no further confirmed cases of scarlet fever, but we felt cancelling the discos yesterday was the right thing to do.  We do recognise there were some upset keen dancers, and so we will make sure we rearrange a disco evening in the new year.

Finally, we hope you have a wonderful festive period and that Christmas brings great joy for you all, as well as some rest before the start of the new year.

We look forward to seeing you all back on Thursday 5th January.

CAYAK Competition

Mrs Cowburn has invited all the children to participate in an art competition.  The Cambridge Area Young Artist Competition (CAYAC) has been going for many years and many times we have enjoyed entering Swavesey Primary school artwork and seeing it displayed alongside art from all around the county.

This year the exhibition will be held at Hinchingbrooke house in February.   Mrs Cowburn would like the children to  create an art piece in any media (but preferably not 3D) of about A4 or A5 size.  The subject can be anything your child finds inspiring.  Please make sure name, age, year group and class are clearly marked on the back of the piece.   We can only enter one piece of art for each category: early years, key stage1, year 3/4 and year 5/6 into the CAYAC competition but there will be a certificate of entry for everyone who joins in the competition and some of the best pieces will be chosen for display in school as well.

Art works need to be in school for the first Friday of term, January 6th.

Enjoy making, Mrs Cowburn is looking forward to seeing your lovely art work.

Please Help Keep our Children Safe

Please support the village and the safety of our children by sending your comments to the Parish council on their bid for the Local Highways Scheme

What is the Local Highways Improvement Scheme?

Each year CCC provides a funding scheme across Cambridgeshire for communities to apply for funding towards proposals for highway improvements in their area, the LHI Scheme.

Swavesey Parish Council applies to this scheme each year and has been successful in receiving funding for a number of improvement schemes around the village over the past few years.

2023/24

Swavesey Parish Council will be submitting an application for an improvement scheme for the School Lane/Thistle Green junction area to:

  • Slow traffic down by improving the existing table junction (making it more effective, as per the Gibraltar Lane-School Lane junction).
  • Incorporate two crossing points at either end of the table junction – to help make it safer to cross School Lane, particularly at School start and finish times.
  • Include double yellow lines around Thistle Green junction, to stop vehicles parking right on the corners and blocking the crossing points, how dangerous it is currently to try to cross School Lane.
  • Repaint the road markings and table junction markings, making the feature more visible.

As part of the application, evidence from the local community in support of the scheme and the reasons for proposing it are to be included.  The Council welcome your comments and these can be sent to the Parish Council at clerk@swavesey.org.uk
