Updates from Mrs Norden

It was lovely to see some of our children in their National Organisation Uniforms on Tuesday as part of the celebrations for their Founders/Thinking Day.  The theme for the Scouting and Guiding communities across the world this year, and through to 2024, is 'Our World, Our Equal Future'.  This will focus on how people across the world are affected by environmental issues with some more disproportionately so.  A theme which, as a school, we continue to also explore through various initiatives, including through our Eco committee work.  Hopefully later this term they will share some of their work with you.

Next week we will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of World Book Day, which is on Thursday 3rd.  Through the week we will be engaging in a variety of activities linked to reading and books in general including a whole school quiz on Friday.  Although we will not be having a formal 'dress-up' day, if children wish to come to school as a favourite book character on Thursday 3rd they can.   We hope you will join our celebrations of reading at home and our website reading page has tips and book recommendations for you found here.

Later this half-term we will be joining in with National science week, with a whole school Literacy project being combined with our STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), and we look forward to sharing with you our experiences and learning.

This week has brought about changes to Covid legal requirements, and schools have now received the DfE and Local Authority guidance based on UKHSA directives for educational establishments.  These inform our own risk assessment process for this next phase and will be reviewed on 1st April in line with the national review. I know that changes bring questions, and documents can often be confusing, but I hope the information I set out today for our systems until the end of this term are clear for you.  Please see the Covid section below for details.

Covid Update:

Yesterday the DfE published its operational guidance and contingency framework for schools, and the LA set out its guidance for maintained schools today until 1st April. From this we have set out our systems for the remainder of the spring term which you can find below.  Please also click here for a letter from the local authority detailing their information for parents of children in maintained schools.

1. In school systems will remain the same until the end of term but will be reviewed weekly using national and local data.  Should local data reduce to the lower national level then we may reintroduce further inside mixing and activities.

This includes:

a). Staff wearing masks in communal areas and when entering the work/learning spaces of others.

b). One-way system for drop off and collection.

c). Maintaining distancing when moving around the premises to reduce transmission.

d). Only visitors who support curriculum and special needs provision, or to carryout essential premises work, will be allowed in the building.

e). No planned indoor events.

2. In line with the DfE/UKHSA:  "a pupil with the key symptoms of COVID-19 should not attend the school, given the potential risk to others". Pupils with a confirmed case of Covid, "should not attend school while infectious and should take an LFD test from 5 days after their symptoms started (or the day their test was taken if they did not have symptoms) followed by another one the next day. If both test results are negative, they should return to their school if they normally attend one, as long as they feel well enough to do so and do not have a temperature."

3. If a child has Covid symptoms we will ask you to collect them and take them for a test.  The LA request that a PCR is taken to support data gathering to understand the national and local situations.

4. Where there is a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19, we are able to refuse entry to school to protect other pupils and staff from possible infection with COVID-19.

School Council Competition:

Please click here for details of our school council's competition to find our 'new 5R character' illustrations and accompanying narrative.  The children have been busy taking part in democratic processes to come to a final decision on the 'new characters' for our 5Rs here at Swavesey.  The next step is for us to find the illustration and narrative to bring their ideas to life.

Council members have explained the competition to their classes, but we hope you will encourage and support your budding artists and authors to take part.  The closing date is 1st March.

Admin Updates:

1. Pre-booking school dinners - please ensure you pre-book your children's school dinner meals, including for Reception and year 1/ 2, preferably a week in advance. We have had many children expecting school hot dinners, or school packed lunches, this week which were not booked.  One day this week we had 45 children expecting school dinners which were not booked.  If the kitchen have such vast differences between booked and expected dinners we simply may not have enough food to be able to feed those who have not booked in advance.

2. 1st March - Special Pancake Day lunch - please see the menu here.

Vacancies:

As a school we have vacancies in our midday supervisors and cleaning/premises teams. Our MDS information can be found using this link here. Other roles will be added soon to the same page.

PTA Fundraising

As part of the PTA fundraising we now have an Amazon wish list, which has a range of books we would like to purchase for the school.  If you would like ot donate by buying us a book then please go to the list sharing page here.  We will add a template to the inside cover of the book to highlight your donation unless you instruct us otherwise.

If this is successful we will add more items to the list.

Please note that when you click the link the page will show Mrs Whislter's name with 'Swavesey School Wish List' underneath.
