'Storming' through as NETBALL COUNTY CHAMPIONS 2026

Wind, rain, hail, thunder and lightening didn't stop the team spirit...

On Tuesday 9th June, the 'A' team league winners headed off to Northstowe Secondary School to compete in the COUNTY FINALS 2026.

19 schools had qualified from Peterborough, Wisbech and Cambridgeshire. We were one of the top 4 teams representing the South Cambridgeshire School Sports Partnership. It was another windy and stormy day. We had thought that it might be cancelled, but luckily the afternoon was quite dry, with only big black clouds looming in the distance!

We had four matches initially in Division B, against schools we had never played before, and knew they would all be very challenging as it was the County Finals. There was a central timer for the four courts, but our first match was delayed due to one of the posts having a bolt missing, making our first half only two minutes long! We were playing Holywell and the match was very close throughout, but in the last minute, Holywell scored 2 late goals, enabling them to win 4-2. Our second match was against Burwell, which was very end to end, but we managed to win 1-0. Our next was against St Johns and very close once again, but we won 3-2. We then played Alderman Jacobs school and won 3-0.

After a short break, whilst the scorekeepers' number-crunched', we were told that we had advanced into Division 1, along with two of our SCSSP schools, which was brilliant! We knew that we would finish in the top 4 of the county, which we were all excited about. Our first match was against Great Abington, who we had played against in the 'A' finals. It was a superb match, with Swavesey marking well, and winning 6-1. Our next was against another SCSSP school, Trumpington Park, and we won 3-0. Our final match was against John Clare, who have won the tournament for the last two years. It was a tough match and Swavesey tried hard, but the goals wouldn't go in for us and we lost the match 8-3

Now we had to await the final overall results, but the clouds were arriving, and the sky was turning darker and darker, with the wind blowing strong. We gathered for the results from 19 upwards... the first SCSSP school, Great Abington, came 4th, then John Clare, then another SCSSP school, Trumpington Park, came runners-up, which meant SWAVESEY PRIMARY SCHOOL HAD WON!!!

COUNTY CHAMPIONS 2026, the highest we have ever finished (usually 4th or 5th!). In celebration, the hail came down, the thunder clapped, and the lightening struck, but the team fought through the blustery conditions to receive their medals and another trophy! The players were thrilled, as were the parents / carers, Miss Bennett and me!

What an amazing two years this team have had, and a lot of early morning training sessions, come rain or shine, they all turned up! I am so proud of the team and have already sent them my own personal message.

It just goes to show that practise makes PROGRESS...a hat-trick of netball wins, 'A' and 'B' league winners and now County Champions 2026. Well done to both teams.

The main photo with the trophy was taken in the storm, but there are a few more in the photo gallery, all using our new competition 'safeguarding emoji' masks...
